Who is responsible
SharedExpense is operated by Sumith Rajagopalan. For anything in this policy, write to [email protected].
What is collected
Only what the app needs in order to work:
- Your account
- Your email address and password. The password is handled by our authentication provider and is stored hashed; it is never visible to us. You may optionally add a display name and an avatar image URL.
- The expenses you record
- The amount, currency, date, optional time, optional description, the category you chose, the name of the account that paid, and which group (if any) the expense belongs to. If you spread a bill across months, the coverage dates you set are stored too.
- Your accounts and categories
- The names, types and currencies of the payment accounts you set up, and the category names you create. These are labels you choose; no bank or card numbers are ever collected.
- Groups
- Group names and colours, who is a member, each member’s role, and when they joined or left. If you invite someone who has no account yet, their email address is stored so the invitation can be matched when they sign up.
- Technical data
- Standard information that any website receives in order to serve a page, such as your IP address and browser user agent, processed by our hosting provider. We do not combine it with your account or use it to build a profile.
What is deliberately not collected
There is no analytics of any kind, no tracking pixels, no advertising, and no third-party scripts on this site or in the app. Nobody is paid to receive information about you, because nobody receives any.
SharedExpense does not connect to banks and does not import statements. Every expense is one you typed in. It also takes no payment details, because the app is free.
What stays on your device
The app works offline, which means some of your data is stored in your browser as well as on the server:
- Queued expenses
- An expense you add while offline is held in your browser until it can be sent. Until then it exists only on that device.
- A copy of your reference data
- Your accounts, categories, groups and recently viewed months are cached so the app is usable without a connection.
- Preferences and app files
- Your report filter choices are remembered locally, and the app’s own pages and scripts are stored so it can start without a network.
Signing out clears the cached data and the stored pages from that browser. Expenses you queued offline and have not yet synced are kept, so that work is not silently destroyed — you are warned if any are outstanding when you sign out.
Who else processes it
Three service providers process data on our behalf in order to run the application. No one else receives it, and it is never sold or shared for advertising.
- Supabase — Authentication and database hosting
- Stores your account credentials and every record you create in the app. This is where your expenses actually live.
- Netlify — Website and application hosting
- Serves the site and the app. It processes standard server request data, such as IP address and browser user agent, in the course of delivering pages.
- Resend — Transactional email
- Sends group invitation emails. It receives the recipient email address and the group name, and nothing else.
What other people can see
An expense you record against a group is visible to every member of that group, including the amount, description, date, category and the name of the account that paid it, along with the fact that you were the one who logged it. Expenses you record personally are visible only to you.
Expenses stay in a group’s history after you leave it, so the group’s past totals remain correct. Consider that before adding something to a shared group.
SharedExpense does not calculate balances between people and has no settlement feature, so no one is presented with a figure describing what you owe them.
How long it is kept, and deletion
Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can delete individual expenses at any time from within the app, and deleting a group removes the group itself.
There is currently no way to delete your whole account from inside the app. To have your account and its data removed, write to [email protected] and it will be done manually. Note that expenses you added to a shared group will remain in that group’s history, because removing them would change other members’ totals.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of the data held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted, by writing to the address above. Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and comparable regimes elsewhere, you may also have the right to withdraw consent and to complain to a supervisory authority.
The app has no export feature yet, so a copy has to be produced manually on request.
Children
SharedExpense is not intended for children, and accounts should not be created by anyone under 18. If you believe a child has an account, write to us and it will be removed.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected or who receives it, the date at the top will change and the substance will be described here rather than quietly edited.
